Should No. 11 BYU be on upset watch Saturday night in Fort Collins? KSL Sports BYU Insider Mitch Harper opens Thursday's show with the question that nobody in Cougar Nation wants to ask but everybody is quietly thinking about.
Next, Mitch has some fun with the viral story of the week. RotoGrinders published its "Most Handsome College Football Coaches" rankings on Sunday, analyzing 414 images of all 138 FBS head coaches using facial landmark technology that mapped 468 facial landmarks per image against neoclassical facial proportions and Pallett-Link-Lee ratios. Duke's Manny Diaz took the No. 1 spot with a 75.9 out of 100 final score. Indiana's Curt Cignetti landed second. Clemson's Dabo Swinney came in third and had the quote of the week when a reporter told him about the ranking at his Tuesday press conference: "As in good looking? Finally something comes my way. I thought you were gonna say, like, 'most hated guy' or whatever."
In the third segment, Mitch runs through his Week 3 Big 12 picks. It's a loaded slate with 13 games involving Big 12 teams, headlined by the Friday night showdown between No. 22 Houston and No. 13 Texas Tech in Lubbock. Saturday's slate features the inaugural Union Jack Classic at Wembley Stadium in London, where Arizona State takes on Kansas at 10 a.m. MT on FS1, the first Big 12 conference game ever played on foreign soil.
Finally, Mitch wraps the show by pivoting to basketball and sharing his takeaways from the 2026-27 Big 12 men's basketball schedule.

'Powerhouse' BYU prepares for CSU + Get to know the Rams with an insider + Reggie Frischknecht interview
Colorado State's first-year head coach dropped a word this week that tells you how far BYU football has come. KSL Sports BYU Insider Mitch Harper opens Wednesday's episode with the storyline driving the national narrative around Saturday's game in Fort Collins: Jim Mora called BYU a "powerhouse."
No. 11 BYU will be the highest-ranked team to ever play at Canvas Stadium when the Cougars visit Fort Collins on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. MT on CBS. It's the first meeting between the former WAC and Mountain West rivals since November 13, 2010.
BYU leads the all-time series 39-27-3, including a seven-game winning streak dating back to 2004. Mitch breaks down why the "powerhouse" label matters for BYU's playoff positioning and what it means that opposing coaches are no longer tiptoeing around the compliment.
In the second segment, Mitch sits down with Kevin Lytle, the veteran Colorado State athletics reporter for The Coloradoan in Fort Collins. Lytle has covered the Rams for years.
Finally, Mitch closes the show with a one-on-one interview with BYU wide receiver Reggie Frischknecht, just days removed from hauling in his first career collegiate touchdown. The 6-foot-4, 207-pound redshirt sophomore from Ephraim, Utah, took a short pass from Bear Bachmeier over the middle and turned it into a 25-yard score early in the second quarter against Arizona, giving BYU its first lead of the game at 14-10. It was a moment that crystallized one of the most unconventional paths to the BYU roster in recent memory.

BYU climbs rankings after impressive Big 12 opener + Football & basketball recruiting update
BYU is on the move. KSL Sports BYU Insider Mitch Harper opens Monday's episode with a deep dive into the Week 3 AP Top 25, where the Cougars jumped four spots from No. 15 to No. 11. Next, Mitch breaks down Saturday's 28-17 victory over Arizona at LaVell Edwards Stadium, a game that showcased the two things that define this BYU team: grit and second-half adjustments. Then, Mitch transitions to the recruiting trail.
BYU's opening Big 12 victory doubled as a major recruiting showcase. Winning on national television on FOX, in a packed LaVell Edwards Stadium, against a quality Big 12 opponent is exactly the kind of atmosphere that sells itself to high school juniors — and the Cougars' staff knows it. Mitch details who attended and what this early investment in 2028 recruiting suggests about where Kalani Sitake and his staff see the program headed.
On the basketball side, five-star small forward AJ Williams announced his top 10 schools on Monday, and BYU made the cut. Williams, a 6-foot-7, 220-pound wing from Eagles Landing Christian Academy in McDonough, Georgia, was originally the No. 1 overall prospect in the 2028 class before reclassifying to 2027, where he now ranks as the No. 5 overall recruit.

BYU drops in AP Top 25 poll + My dream for LSU + Brent Brennan on the LES crowd
The Cougars win by 56 and drop a spot. Welcome to the AP Poll, Cougar Nation. KSL Sports BYU Insider Mitch Harper breaks down No. 15 BYU's one-spot slide in Monday's Week 2 AP Top 25 despite a dominant 63-7 demolition of Utah Tech in the season opener.
Next, Mitch dives into the Week 2 depth chart notes heading into Saturday's Big 12 opener against Arizona at LaVell Edwards Stadium (1:30 p.m. MT, FOX & KSL NewsRadio). BYU may be at less than full strength after some bumps from the opener, and the coaching staff hinted at potential adjustments along the lines.
In the fun segment of the day, Mitch plays a game of "Dream for the Big 12" — what if LSU, now No. 8 with five first-place votes and one of the SEC's premier brands, were a Big 12 program? If the SEC really wants to boot the Tigers, bring "the boot" to the MONSTER BIG 12.
And to close the show, Mitch unpacks the quote of the week from Arizona head coach Brent Brennan. When asked about returning to LaVell Edwards Stadium, where his Wildcats were throttled 41-19 in front of 64,000-plus in 2024, Brennan went on the record: "I didn't feel like the crowd was a problem in '24. I felt like we didn't play well. We turned the ball over too many times. I think that's a very separate issue" He also called the environment "great" and said he "respects" the BYU fanbase, but made clear Arizona won't be using the crowd as an excuse this time around. Brennan praised LJ Martin as "a total stud" and called Kalani Sitake "one of my favorite people in this profession." Game week is here! BYU football reveals captains + What's trending up entering the season
The wait is over — BYU Football game week is officially here.
KSL Sports BYU Insider Mitch Harper opens today's show buzzing with energy as No. 14 BYU enters the final countdown to Saturday's season opener against Utah Tech at LaVell Edwards Stadium (6 p.m. MT, ESPN+). After a 12-2 campaign in 2025, this is one of the most anticipated season openers in BYU's modern era, and Mitch sets the table for what's ahead.
First up, Kalani Sitake revealed the 2026 Team Leadership Council on Monday morning — a 20-member group voted on by the players, featuring eight captains and 12 co-captains. Returning as captains for the second straight year are running back LJ Martin and defensive tackle Keanu Tanuvasa. Joining them on offense are sophomore quarterback Bear Bachmeier, senior center Bruce Mitchell, and Oregon transfer tight end Roger Saleapaga II. The defensive captain group rounds out with linebacker Isaiah Glasker, Cal transfer linebacker Cade Uluave, and cornerback Evan Johnson. The transfers earning captain nods before playing a single snap as Cougars is a notable storyline, and Mitch breaks down what it says about the locker room culture. The 12 co-captains include repeat selections Raider Damuni and Andrew Gentry, plus standouts like Walker Lyons, Jojo Phillips, Bodie Schoonover, Therrian Alexander III, Hunter Clegg, and kicker Matthias Dunn.

The uniform combo for week one also dropped Monday, and BYU is going with an all-royal-blue helmet, royal-blue jersey, and white pants for the opener — the first time this combination has been worn in the Big 12 era. BYU also shifted to a weekly uniform reveal approach this season instead of releasing all 12 combos before kickoff. A new Entrata sponsorship patch will also make its debut on the jerseys. BYU basketball picks up a commitment from standout big-man Jaxon Kohler
BYU basketball picked up a commitment from former Michigan State big man Jaxon Kohler.
Kohler picked BYU over Kentucky, Kansas, and Louisville. He gives BYU a big man who competed in the NBA Summer League over the past summer.
Kohler, an American Fork, Utah native is eligible due to a court injunction that gives him the ability to take advantage of a fifth year in the new 5-in-5 rule.
During his senior season at Michigan State, Kohler was an Honorable Mention All-Big Ten performer.

Reaction to BYU's preseason AP Top 25 ranking + Speculation continues on resources
The preseason AP Top 25 is out and BYU checks in at No. 14, tied with USC with 839 points. KSL Sports BYU Insider Mitch Harper reacts to the Cougars' highest preseason ranking since the 1985 season, the year after BYU's national championship. It's only the 13th time in program history BYU has appeared in the preseason AP poll and just the second time in the Kalani Sitake era. Four Big 12 teams made the cut — Texas Tech at No. 12, BYU at No. 14, Utah at No. 21, and Houston at No. 23 — and BYU's October 17 home date with No. 4 Notre Dame is already circled in red. Historically, BYU has finished higher than its preseason AP ranking only twice (1981, 2009). Can the Cougars make it a third? Mitch discusses what this ranking means for expectations, the College Football Playoff picture, and how voters are viewing BYU's returning production, headlined by Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year LJ Martin and quarterback Bear Bachmeier.

Kalani Sitake discusses relationship with Brian Santiago + QB coach Tyler Hughes interview
It was a busy Wednesday at the BYU Student Athlete Building, and KSL Sports BYU Insider Mitch Harper unpacks all of it.
The biggest headline: Kalani Sitake met with reporters at team photo day and addressed the elephant in the room — his relationship with athletic director Brian Santiago and his recent comments about BYU's resources. After saying on a recent radio interview that BYU has been "given the challenge of doing the most with the least," Sitake was pressed on what that means going forward. His answer was direct: "My agent's going to handle all of that stuff. I'm going to focus on this year's team. As long as I'm the head coach at BYU, I'm going to fight like crazy to make this a premier program." And on his relationship with Santiago? "I'm easy to get along with as long as you take care of our football team."

Reaction to BYU hiring Kentucky's Marc Hill as Deputy AD + Chad Kauha'aha'a interview
Big news in the BYU Athletics front office. KSL Sports BYU Insider Mitch Harper breaks down the hiring of Marc Hill as BYU's new deputy athletic director. Hill arrives in Provo after spending 27 years at the University of Kentucky, where he served as deputy director of athletics since 2019 and was the football sport administrator since 2012.
Hill was widely considered the frontrunner to succeed longtime Kentucky AD Mitch Barnhart before the school went with an external hire in J Batt. At Kentucky, Hill helped spearhead major facility projects, including a $130 million football stadium renovation, a $49 million baseball stadium, and a $19 million soccer/softball complex. BYU AD Brian Santiago called Hill "a great fit" who brings "a wealth of experience from the highest level of collegiate athletics." BYU advancement VP Keith Vorkink added that Hill's "experience, leadership and alignment with BYU's values" make him an excellent addition. This hire comes just days after the athletic department had to publicly shut down false rumors about Santiago's job status. Mitch discusses what Hill's arrival means for BYU's administrative infrastructure, Kalani Sitake's desire for additional support at the top, and how this fits into the bigger picture of the program's growth in the Big 12.
Also on today's episode, Mitch sits down with BYU football outside linebackers coach Chad Kauha'aha'a. The veteran defensive coach, a former Utah defensive lineman, was promoted from senior analyst to outside linebackers coach in February after spending two seasons behind the scenes on Kalani Sitake's staff. Kauha'aha'a brings over two decades of coaching experience at programs including USC, UCLA, Wisconsin, Utah, Oregon State, Boise State, UNLV, Utah State, and Weber State. He and Sitake have a long coaching history together, dating back to their time on the same staff at Oregon State and at Utah. In the interview, Coach Kauha'aha'a discusses developing BYU's edge rushers heading into 2026, what he's seen from his outside linebackers group through fall camp, and what it means to be coaching on the field after two years as an analyst.

BYU addresses rumors surrounding Brian Santiago + Fall Camp: Week Two observations
Rumors spread like wildfire across social media and fan message boards over the weekend that BYU athletic director Brian Santiago could be fired. It wasn't true. But did it add to the speculation? KSL Sports BYU Insider Mitch Harper breaks down what happened, how BYU's athletic department took the unusual step of having Associate AD for Communications Jon McBride post directly on CougarBoard to officially shut down the speculation.
Santiago, who was named BYU's athletic director in May 2025 after Tom Holmoe's retirement, was spotted on the sideline at a BYU women's soccer game over the weekend and was at fall camp practice on Monday in a navy blue bucket hat.
Co-worker Tyson Hutchins confirmed BYU created the official message board account earlier this year as a way to meet fans where they are — and called the rumor "ridiculous." In his first year leading the department, BYU finished No. 25 in the Learfield Directors' Cup Standings, the highest-ranked athletic department in the Big 12. Will BYU QB Bear Bachmeier run the ball less in 2026? + Cosmo goes into the Hall
BYU football fall camp is rolling, and KSL Sports BYU Insider Mitch Harper kicks off today's episode with the question on every Cougar fan's mind: Will Bear Bachmeier run the ball less in 2026? After rushing for 527 yards and 11 touchdowns as a true freshman last season, BYU offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick gave some insight that there might be less running from the star quarterback.
Mitch breaks down what that means for the offensive game plan and whether Bear can balance protecting himself while still being a threat with his legs.
Next up, Cosmo the Cougar has finally been inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2026, with the announcement coming live on Good Morning America. With three Guinness World Records, a 2020 National Mascot Championship, and viral stunts that routinely break the internet, the real question is: what took so long? Cosmo is only the second Utah-based mascot to enter the Hall of Fame, joining the Jazz Bear, who was inducted 20 years ago in 2006. Mitch discusses why this honor was long overdue.
In a quick-hitter segment, former BYU star and No. 1 overall pick AJ Dybantsa predicted what he thinks his NBA 2K27 rating should be — an 80 overall. The game's developers landed him at a 79. Close, but not quite. The Washington Wizards rookie led the nation in scoring at BYU with 25.5 points per game last season. Diving into BYU's wide receiver room with Fesi Sitake + Expectations for defense
As BYU football opens fall camp this week, KSL Sports BYU Insider Mitch Harper breaks down the expectations for first-year defensive coordinator Kelly Poppinga. With Jay Hill now at Michigan, "K-Pop" inherits a defense that ranked sixth nationally in returning production and helped BYU go 23-4 over the past two seasons. Poppinga discussed the influence of learning the defense under Hill and the experiences that have prepared him for this moment — 18 years of coaching that trace all the way back to a defensive internship under Bronco Mendenhall. Mitch dives into what that means for BYU in 2026, how much continuity BYU fans should expect, and where Poppinga plans to add his own flavor with a talented and deep roster on that side of the ball.

Also on today's episode, Mitch discusses BYU basketball, where the Cougars concluded summer practices. They also officially announced the signing of 6-foot-9 Polish center Jakub Urbaniak. The 23-year-old big man averaged 8.9 points and 5.7 rebounds across the EuroCup and PLK last season for Slask Wroclaw and brings FIBA national team experience with Poland. Head coach Kevin Young called Urbaniak a versatile player on both ends of the floor, praising his motor and competitiveness. Under-the-radar BYU players to watch in camp + Uhila Wolfgramm interview
KSL Sports BYU Insider Mitch Harper reacts to the Cougars landing at No. 15 in the 2026 US LBM Coaches Poll — their highest preseason coaches ranking in years and a significant jump from the No. 23 slot they occupied entering the 2025 season. BYU is the second-highest ranked Big 12 team behind No. 12 Texas Tech, with Utah slotting in at No. 21 and Houston at No. 24. Mitch breaks down what the ranking signals about national perception of the program after a 12-2 season, a Big 12 Championship Game appearance, and a Pop-Tarts Bowl victory — and whether No. 15 is too high, too low, or just right for a team that finished No. 12 in the final coaches poll a year ago. With the AP Top 25 preseason poll still two weeks away, Mitch discusses where BYU could land there given that composite projections have the Cougars around No. 13 nationally.

BYU basketball lands a center from Poland + Five football players ready for a jump in 2026
Kevin Young's search for a center is finally over, or at least getting close to the finish line. BYU basketball has reportedly landed a commitment from 6-foot-9 Polish center Jakub Urbaniak, according to Jonathan Givony of DraftExpress.

One of the most pivotal weeks on the college athletics calendar is here: Big 12 spring meetings.

Ultimate BYU football trips during college & NFL seasons + Recruiting nuggets
The NFL schedule was released for the 2026 season on Thursday night. It was an opportunity to start planning the ultimate football road trips for the 2026 BYU football season.
Luckily for Cougar fans, there are some solid road opportunities that line up with an NFL game for the upcoming fall.
KSL Sports BYU Insider Mitch Harper broke it all down.
BYU football spring opponent tour continues as Mitch welcomes Henry Greenstein of the Lawrence Journal-World and KUsports to get to know the Kansas Jayhawks.
BYU travels to Lawrence on November 21st this fall.
Then, he closed out this episode of the show with a recruiting update as BYU football offered 2029 quarterback Jake Matsen from American Fork High School.
They also issued an offer to Moa Havili from Granger High School for the class of 2027. The other intriguing recruit to monitor is UCLA signee Weston Port, who is currently serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He announced that he was de-committing from the Bruins and would open up his recruitment.

BYU basketball revives rivalry with Utah State + Arizona State: Spring outlook
BYU basketball announced a two-game series with in-state rival Utah State. It will be the first meeting between the two programs since 2021.

AJ & Richie invited to combine | Notre Dame spring outlook | Predicting TV and kickoff times for BYU football games
