Clock controversy in BYU's win over Notre Dame + Loaded recruiting weekend
BYU's upset of Notre Dame is still the talk of college football, and part of that conversation is now about one second. KSL Sports BYU Insider Mitch Harper breaks down Saturday night's 28-24 win, the clock controversy on the final play, the numbers behind the night, and this week's Cougar Stock Exchange.
Mitch starts with what the win did for BYU in the polls. The Cougars jumped six spots to No. 2 in Sunday's AP Top 25 and received 20 first-place votes, finishing behind only No. 1 Miami. BYU is No. 3 in the US LBM Coaches Poll behind Miami and Ohio State. It's the first time since 1984 that BYU has been in the top three of both major polls. BYU is also 6-0 for the third straight season, a first in program history. The win was BYU's first over Notre Dame since 2004 and its first over a top-10 team since 2018. It came on a night when five of the AP's top eight teams lost, the first time that has happened on a single regular-season Saturday.
Also, Mitch shares thoughts on Bear Bachmeier sounding off on what that win over Notre Dame meant to him. Was that a big deal or not?
Mitch dives into the big recruiting weekend BYU football hosted for the Notre Dame game and also shares what he believes is trending up and trending down for the Cougars.

Latest on who's in and who's out for BYU against TCU + 2026-27 hoops roster breakdown + Cannon DeVries interview
The bye week is over, and No. 10 BYU heads to Fort Worth with a long list of injuries. KSL Sports BYU Insider Mitch Harper opens Thursday's show with the first availability report for Saturday's game against TCU. BYU will be without eight players. Mitch breaks down the key personnel who won't be available for the Cougars.
Next, Mitch turns to basketball. With practice underway, he breaks down Kevin Young's 2026-27 roster in year three. The roster now runs through point guard Rob Wright III, and keeping him was the most important move of BYU's offseason. Wright entered the transfer portal in April, visited other schools, and then came back to Provo for his junior season. He was later named the program's "Cougar of the Summer."
Mitch also gives his Week 5 Big 12 Football predictions.
Then, he closes out the show talking with BYU football defensive back/return specialist Cannon DeVries.

Could BYU send TCU coach Sonny Dykes on the hot seat? + TJ Woods gives update on the O-Line + Football recruiting notes

BYU returns from its bye week with bad news at a key position. KSL Sports BYU Insider Mitch Harper opens Tuesday's show with the injury to starting right tackle Andrew Gentry. The Michigan transfer, a co-captain and two-year starter, got hurt in the first quarter of the 41-23 win at Colorado State. At first, he thought it was a mild ankle sprain. It turned out to be worse. BYU left him off the depth chart for Saturday's trip to TCU, and in a message on Instagram, Gentry said the injury was "a little more significant" than he expected.
Who is next for BYU at right tackle? The top contenders look to be Siosiua Latu-Finau and Bott Mulitalo.
In the second segment, Mitch brings back J.D. Andress of TCU on SI. The two last talked during BYU's spring tour in May, and this time they break down the Horned Frogs ahead of Saturday's game at Amon G. Carter Stadium (5 p.m. MT, ESPN & KSL NewsRadio). TCU is 2-2 and 0-1 in the Big 12.
Mitch closes the show with an update on former BYU basketball players reporting to NBA Training Camps. AJ Dybantsa is preparing for his rookie season, Egor Demin gears up for year two in Brooklyn, Richie Saunders update in Memphis, and Keba Keita with the Indiana Pacers.

What we've learned about BYU in first quarter of season + Big 12's International future
No. 9 BYU is 3-0 and sitting in the top 10 of both major polls for the fifth time in seven seasons. KSL Sports BYU Insider Mitch Harper uses the bye week to step back from the game-to-game grind and deliver a big-picture episode — what he's learned about this team through three games.
Mitch opens with his observations from a quarter of the way through the most anticipated season in BYU football history. The Cougars have outscored opponents 132-47 across wins over Utah Tech (63-7), Arizona (28-17), and Colorado State (41-23). They're averaging 44.0 points and 514 total yards per game. But the stats only tell part of the story. Mitch identifies four things he's learned that the numbers alone don't capture.
In the second segment, Mitch explores a question that the Big 12's global expansion has put squarely on the table: Could BYU play an international game in the future? The 2026 Big 12 schedule featured two games on European soil — TCU versus North Carolina in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic in Dublin, Ireland on August 29, and the inaugural Union Jack Classic between Arizona State and Kansas at Wembley Stadium in London on September 19. Commissioner Brett Yormark has made no secret of his desire to grow the Big 12's international footprint, and the league's 2026 schedule release emphasized the conference's "global expansion" as a marquee initiative. Mitch makes the case for why BYU would be a natural fit for an international showcase.
Then, finally, we're closing in on a potential vote in the U.S. Senate for the Protect College Sports Act. Would this be a good thing for BYU athletics?

Postgame reaction from Fort Collins: No. 11 BYU 41, Colorado State 23
3-0 feels oh-so-good for BYU football.
KSL Sports BYU Insider Mitch Harper hosts a special postgame reaction show live from Canvas Stadium in Fort Collins after No. 11 BYU overpowered Colorado State 41-23 on Saturday night, moving to 3-0 for a fourth consecutive season and the 20th time in program history. BYU is now 3-0 for the sixth time under Kalani Sitake — and this one was never in doubt.
Mitch opens with the performance that had the CBS broadcast crew running out of superlatives. LJ Martin put on a clinic, rushing for 176 yards and three touchdowns on just 15 carries — and 173 of those yards came in the first half. On BYU's second offensive play of the game, Martin broke free for a 56-yard touchdown run to set the tone less than a minute into the contest. He followed it with a 2-yard scoring plunge to make it 14-7, then ripped off an 8-yard touchdown to cap a six-play, 73-yard drive and give BYU a 21-7 lead before the first quarter was over. All three touchdowns came in the opening 15 minutes. The reigning Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year carried the ball just once in the second half with BYU up big.
On the defensive side, Kelly Poppinga's unit held Colorado State to just 302 total yards — more than 200 fewer than the Rams' season average entering the game. CSU managed only 82 rushing yards on 24 attempts, a 3.4-yard average, after coming in averaging 225 per game. The Rams, who had scored 93 combined points in their first two wins over Wyoming and Southern Utah, were limited to just seven points through three quarters. The BYU defense held Hauss Hejny largely in check after CSU's opening-drive touchdown response. Colorado State has now lost 28 consecutive games against ranked opponents — their last win over a ranked team came in 2002 against No. 7 Colorado.
Mitch also addresses a segment of Colorado State's student section that directed anti-faith chants toward BYU's players and fans during the pregame. Colorado State issued a public statement after the game: "Mocking anyone's faith has no place at CSU. It runs counter to our community's values and to who we are. BYU's players, coaches and fans deserved better. We are addressing this with our students." Sitake took the high road in his presser, noting that the chants came from a "mostly minority" of the crowd and that his players are "self-motivated" regardless of the environment.

BYU on upset watch? + Where Kalani ranks on 'handsome coaches list' + Jake Clifton interview
Should No. 11 BYU be on upset watch Saturday night in Fort Collins? KSL Sports BYU Insider Mitch Harper opens Thursday's show with the question that nobody in Cougar Nation wants to ask but everybody is quietly thinking about.
Next, Mitch has some fun with the viral story of the week. RotoGrinders published its "Most Handsome College Football Coaches" rankings on Sunday, analyzing 414 images of all 138 FBS head coaches using facial landmark technology that mapped 468 facial landmarks per image against neoclassical facial proportions and Pallett-Link-Lee ratios. Duke's Manny Diaz took the No. 1 spot with a 75.9 out of 100 final score. Indiana's Curt Cignetti landed second. Clemson's Dabo Swinney came in third and had the quote of the week when a reporter told him about the ranking at his Tuesday press conference: "As in good looking? Finally something comes my way. I thought you were gonna say, like, 'most hated guy' or whatever."
In the third segment, Mitch runs through his Week 3 Big 12 picks. It's a loaded slate with 13 games involving Big 12 teams, headlined by the Friday night showdown between No. 22 Houston and No. 13 Texas Tech in Lubbock. Saturday's slate features the inaugural Union Jack Classic at Wembley Stadium in London, where Arizona State takes on Kansas at 10 a.m. MT on FS1, the first Big 12 conference game ever played on foreign soil.
Finally, Mitch wraps the show by pivoting to basketball and sharing his takeaways from the 2026-27 Big 12 men's basketball schedule.

'Powerhouse' BYU prepares for CSU + Get to know the Rams with an insider + Reggie Frischknecht interview
Colorado State's first-year head coach dropped a word this week that tells you how far BYU football has come. KSL Sports BYU Insider Mitch Harper opens Wednesday's episode with the storyline driving the national narrative around Saturday's game in Fort Collins: Jim Mora called BYU a "powerhouse."
No. 11 BYU will be the highest-ranked team to ever play at Canvas Stadium when the Cougars visit Fort Collins on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. MT on CBS. It's the first meeting between the former WAC and Mountain West rivals since November 13, 2010.
BYU leads the all-time series 39-27-3, including a seven-game winning streak dating back to 2004. Mitch breaks down why the "powerhouse" label matters for BYU's playoff positioning and what it means that opposing coaches are no longer tiptoeing around the compliment.
In the second segment, Mitch sits down with Kevin Lytle, the veteran Colorado State athletics reporter for The Coloradoan in Fort Collins. Lytle has covered the Rams for years.
Finally, Mitch closes the show with a one-on-one interview with BYU wide receiver Reggie Frischknecht, just days removed from hauling in his first career collegiate touchdown. The 6-foot-4, 207-pound redshirt sophomore from Ephraim, Utah, took a short pass from Bear Bachmeier over the middle and turned it into a 25-yard score early in the second quarter against Arizona, giving BYU its first lead of the game at 14-10. It was a moment that crystallized one of the most unconventional paths to the BYU roster in recent memory.

Why is BYU playing at Colorado State? + Dawson Baker & Dean Rueckert interviews

BYU climbs rankings after impressive Big 12 opener + Football & basketball recruiting update
BYU is on the move. KSL Sports BYU Insider Mitch Harper opens Monday's episode with a deep dive into the Week 3 AP Top 25, where the Cougars jumped four spots from No. 15 to No. 11. Next, Mitch breaks down Saturday's 28-17 victory over Arizona at LaVell Edwards Stadium, a game that showcased the two things that define this BYU team: grit and second-half adjustments. Then, Mitch transitions to the recruiting trail.
BYU's opening Big 12 victory doubled as a major recruiting showcase. Winning on national television on FOX, in a packed LaVell Edwards Stadium, against a quality Big 12 opponent is exactly the kind of atmosphere that sells itself to high school juniors — and the Cougars' staff knows it. Mitch details who attended and what this early investment in 2028 recruiting suggests about where Kalani Sitake and his staff see the program headed.
On the basketball side, five-star small forward AJ Williams announced his top 10 schools on Monday, and BYU made the cut. Williams, a 6-foot-7, 220-pound wing from Eagles Landing Christian Academy in McDonough, Georgia, was originally the No. 1 overall prospect in the 2028 class before reclassifying to 2027, where he now ranks as the No. 5 overall recruit.
Finally, Mitch wraps with the Cougar Stock Exchange report. What's trending up and trending down in the world of BYU sports.

BYU drops in AP Top 25 poll + My dream for LSU + Brent Brennan on the LES crowd
The Cougars win by 56 and drop a spot. Welcome to the AP Poll, Cougar Nation. KSL Sports BYU Insider Mitch Harper breaks down No. 15 BYU's one-spot slide in Monday's Week 2 AP Top 25 despite a dominant 63-7 demolition of Utah Tech in the season opener.
Next, Mitch dives into the Week 2 depth chart notes heading into Saturday's Big 12 opener against Arizona at LaVell Edwards Stadium (1:30 p.m. MT, FOX & KSL NewsRadio). BYU may be at less than full strength after some bumps from the opener, and the coaching staff hinted at potential adjustments along the lines.
In the fun segment of the day, Mitch plays a game of "Dream for the Big 12" — what if LSU, now No. 8 with five first-place votes and one of the SEC's premier brands, were a Big 12 program? If the SEC really wants to boot the Tigers, bring "the boot" to the MONSTER BIG 12.
And to close the show, Mitch unpacks the quote of the week from Arizona head coach Brent Brennan. When asked about returning to LaVell Edwards Stadium, where his Wildcats were throttled 41-19 in front of 64,000-plus in 2024, Brennan went on the record: "I didn't feel like the crowd was a problem in '24. I felt like we didn't play well. We turned the ball over too many times. I think that's a very separate issue" He also called the environment "great" and said he "respects" the BYU fanbase, but made clear Arizona won't be using the crowd as an excuse this time around. Brennan praised LJ Martin as "a total stud" and called Kalani Sitake "one of my favorite people in this profession." Mitch discusses whether Brennan's dismissal of the crowd will add extra fuel to an already-charged atmosphere for BYU's biggest early-season home game.

What should we expect from K-Pop's first game as DC + BYU games with Alex Kirry + Big 12: Week 1 preview
KSL Sports BYU Insider Mitch Harper is loaded with content to get you ready for the 2026 BYU football season.
Mitch opens the show with a deep dive into the biggest on-field storyline of Saturday's opener: Kelly Poppinga calling a defense for the first time as BYU's defensive coordinator. "K-Pop" takes over for Michigan-bound Jay Hill, inheriting a unit that ranked in the top 20 in scoring defense each of the past two seasons and produced eight defensive touchdowns over three years.
Poppinga, a former BYU linebacker star and 18-year coaching veteran, has promised to keep the foundation Hill built while adding his own flavor — swapping Hill's word "chaos" for his own mantra of havoc.
His first depth chart features 13 defensive positions, signaling a multiple-front approach with five-DB packages and a nickel look.
Kalani Sitake has praised Poppinga all camp, calling him "probably the hardest-working coordinator I've ever been around".
Next, Mitch is joined by KSL colleague Alex Kirry for a conversation about BYU football heading into the season. Kirry, the host of "KSL Brightside" on KSL NewsRadio and former Cougar Tracks host, joined the show to preview the season and play a game of "Bear or Bull."
To close the show, Mitch goes around the Big 12 Conference with his Week 1 picks. From Colorado at Georgia Tech to Baylor vs. Auburn in Atlanta, and every other game in between around the league.

The 2026 BYU football season opener is days away and the buzz in Provo is electric. KSL Sports BYU Insider Mitch Harper opens today's show by making the case for why this could be the year BYU football finally breaks through.
Mitch lays out three compelling reasons.
Next, Mitch recaps a powerful moment from the season premiere of BYU Football with Kalani Sitake, the weekly coaches show filmed live in Studio C at BYU Broadcasting with Voice of the Cougars Greg Wrubell. Sitake showed genuine emotion while discussing what this players mean to him.

Will off-the-field noise distract BYU football? + Depth chart analysis + Insider look at Utah Tech
Game week is here for No. 14 BYU, and KSL Sports BYU Insider Mitch Harper delivers a jam-packed episode to get Cougar Nation fully locked in ahead of Saturday's season opener against Utah Tech at LaVell Edwards Stadium (6 p.m. MT, ESPN+ and KSL NewsRadio).
Mitch opens the show with the biggest off-the-field headline of the week: the BYU athletic department has been restructured, with AD Brian Santiago no longer overseeing football operations directly. The move comes after weeks of public tension between Santiago and head coach Kalani Sitake, who turned down Penn State last winter and has been vocal about BYU needing to invest more resources into the football program. Sitake addressed the restructuring during his Monday press conference, sharing his thoughts on the changes and what they mean for the program moving forward. Mitch breaks down Sitake's comments and wonders: Will this be a distraction for BYU football in 2026? As it was last year leading up to the Big 12 Championship Game?
Mitch Harper sits down with a familiar voice in the Utah sports broadcasting world — Rod Zundel, the "Voice of the Trailblazers" and Director of Broadcasting and Multimedia Content for Utah Tech Athletics — for a special game-week conversation previewing Saturday's BYU-Utah Tech season opener at LaVell Edwards Stadium.
Before becoming the play-by-play voice calling Utah Tech football, men's basketball, and baseball on FM 99.5 in St. George, Zundel spent nearly 24 years at KSL-TV in Salt Lake City as a sports anchor and reporter. He hosted SportsBeat Saturday and Sunday, KSL 5 Golf Utah, and KSL 5 Outdoor Adventures.
He's been calling Trailblazer games since 2022, when Utah Tech made its transition to Division I and the WAC, and now enters his first year covering the program in the Big Sky Conference. In the interview, Zundel gives Cougar Nation the insider view from St. George. He shares what Utah Tech looked like in its Week 0 season opener — a 54-0 loss to No. 1 Montana State at Greater Zion Stadium — and what third-year head coach Lance Anderson's team is working on as it prepares to travel to Provo for its first game against an FBS opponent this season. Zundel discusses the Utah Tech quarterback situation, and the players and schemes BYU fans should keep an eye on Saturday. He also touches on the state of Utah Tech athletics as the Trailblazers embark on their first season in the Big Sky, what the program's long-term trajectory looks like, and the unique challenge of preparing an FCS squad to walk into a packed LaVell Edwards Stadium and face the No. 14 team in the country.
To close out the show, Mitch dives deep into BYU's first official depth chart of the 2026 season. Among the notable takeaways: true freshman wide receiver Legend Glasker is listed as a starter — the first true freshman to open as a starting wideout under Sitake. Cal transfer linebacker Cade Uluave has earned a starting nod at linebacker despite not yet playing a snap in a BYU uniform, and Oregon transfer Kyler Kasper slots in at another receiving spot. Bear Bachmeier returns as the unquestioned QB1 with Treyson Bourguet behind him. On defense, Kelly Poppinga's first depth chart as defensive coordinator features Faletau Satuala back at safety after recovering from his fractured foot, alongside Evan Johnson at corner and Keanu Tanuvasa anchoring the defensive line. Mitch goes position by position, highlighting the starters, the competition, and the names to watch Saturday night.

Game week is here! BYU football reveals captains + What's trending up entering the season
The wait is over — BYU Football game week is officially here.
KSL Sports BYU Insider Mitch Harper opens today's show buzzing with energy as No. 14 BYU enters the final countdown to Saturday's season opener against Utah Tech at LaVell Edwards Stadium (6 p.m. MT, ESPN+). After a 12-2 campaign in 2025, this is one of the most anticipated season openers in BYU's modern era, and Mitch sets the table for what's ahead.
First up, Kalani Sitake revealed the 2026 Team Leadership Council on Monday morning — a 20-member group voted on by the players, featuring eight captains and 12 co-captains. Returning as captains for the second straight year are running back LJ Martin and defensive tackle Keanu Tanuvasa. Joining them on offense are sophomore quarterback Bear Bachmeier, senior center Bruce Mitchell, and Oregon transfer tight end Roger Saleapaga II. The defensive captain group rounds out with linebacker Isaiah Glasker, Cal transfer linebacker Cade Uluave, and cornerback Evan Johnson. The transfers earning captain nods before playing a single snap as Cougars is a notable storyline, and Mitch breaks down what it says about the locker room culture. The 12 co-captains include repeat selections Raider Damuni and Andrew Gentry, plus standouts like Walker Lyons, Jojo Phillips, Bodie Schoonover, Therrian Alexander III, Hunter Clegg, and kicker Matthias Dunn.
Mitch also makes the case to get an invite to Influencer Night in 2027 at LaVell Edwards Stadium.
The uniform combo for week one also dropped Monday, and BYU is going with an all-royal-blue helmet, royal-blue jersey, and white pants for the opener — the first time this combination has been worn in the Big 12 era. BYU also shifted to a weekly uniform reveal approach this season instead of releasing all 12 combos before kickoff. A new Entrata sponsorship patch will also make its debut on the jerseys. To close out the show, Mitch runs through the Cougar Stock Exchange — who's trending up and who's trending down heading into the opener. What are the reasons you should be excited for BYU football in 2026?

Does new Big 12 rule impact Jaxon Kohler? Clearing up the noise + BYU WR Kyler Kasper interview
The Big 12 Conference "unanimously adopted a conference rule" that prevents Big 12 member institutions from fielding professional athletes in any conference-sponsored sport. That raises the question for BYU fans: How does it affect BYU basketball commit Jaxon Kohler?
KSL Sports BYU Insider Mitch Harper answered that question and got a follow-up answer from the Big 12 Conference. He breaks down the timeline regarding Jaxon Kohler, his eligibility, and what's next. Mitch also shares his thoughts on the NCAA and the 5-in-5 rule, and how this has become chaos.
Mitch Harper caught up with BYU football wide receiver Kyler Kasper at the end of fall camp practice.
Kasper transferred in from the University of Oregon to BYU. After two separate injuries, Kasper feels better than ever entering the 2026 season with the Cougars. He discussed how fall camp went, where he's improved as a player, and what fans will learn about BYU's wide receiver unit in 2026.

Thoughts on LES upgrades + BYU practice notes + Kevin Gilbride interview
With the September 5 opener against Utah Tech now less than two weeks away, KSL Sports BYU Insider Mitch Harper delivers a loaded episode.
First up, BYU unveiled a slate of upgrades to LaVell Edwards Stadium that are ready for the 2026 season. The headliner is the new PACS Recruit Lounge located under the east stands — a dedicated space for recruits and their families featuring new seating, food and beverage options, and entertainment areas designed to give BYU's recruiting staff a premium game-day resource. The home locker room also received a full renovation with new lockers, technology, and player amenities, while LaVell's Lounge has been refreshed with an expanded concessions menu, new TVs, décor, and seating. Mitch breaks down what these investments signal about the program's trajectory and how they stack up in the Big 12 facilities arms race.
Next, Mitch tackles the big question every Cougar fan is asking: Will No. 14 BYU make the College Football Playoff in 2026? One national pundit is buying into BYU reaching their first Playoff.
Also on today's show, Mitch chats with third-year BYU tight ends coach Kevin Gilbride. The 20-year coaching veteran who brings over a decade of NFL experience — including stints with the New York Giants, Chicago Bears, and Carolina Panthers — discusses what he believes could be the best tight end room since he arrived on campus. Walker Lyons and Roger Saleapaga have been running with the first-team offense in 12-personnel packages throughout camp, and Gilbride talks about the intersection of college football and the NFL, the development of his group, and the role the tight ends will play in Aaron Roderick's offense this season.
Mitch then shares his latest practice observations from the final stretch of fall camp as the Cougars close out week three with a "Cougar Stock Exchange," discussing what's trending up and trending down in camp.
To close the show, Mitch gives his thoughts on an NFL player, Dae'Quan Wright, expected to join the LSU Tigers after spending the spring and summer with the Cleveland Browns organization. Should college football fans be concerned?

BYU basketball picks up a commitment from standout big-man Jaxon Kohler
BYU basketball picked up a commitment from former Michigan State big man Jaxon Kohler.
Kohler picked BYU over Kentucky, Kansas, and Louisville. He gives BYU a big man who competed in the NBA Summer League over the past summer.
Kohler, an American Fork, Utah native is eligible due to a court injunction that gives him the ability to take advantage of a fifth year in the new 5-in-5 rule.
During his senior season at Michigan State, Kohler was an Honorable Mention All-Big Ten performer.
KSL Sports BYU Insider Mitch Harper shared his reaction to the commitment and what it could mean for BYU's potential lineup in the 2026-27 season.

BYU football practice observations: What stood out + 5-in-5 heats up for basketball
KSL Sports BYU Insider Mitch Harper starts today's show from the practice fields after another eventful day at BYU football fall camp. Day 11 took place Tuesday at the Student-Athlete Building, where media were allowed to watch the final 20 minutes.
Mitch shares his observations from the media window — who flashed, which position battles are tightening up, and how the Cougars are shaping up entering the final stretch before the September 5 opener against Utah Tech. With BYU checking in at No. 14 in the preseason AP Top 25, the expectations are real, and the on-field product at practice is reflecting that.
Then Mitch pivots to the hardwood, where the 5-in-5 eligibility injunctions have turned BYU basketball's roster construction into one of the most fascinating storylines in college hoops. A temporary restraining order in California allows for Michigan State big man Jaxon Kohler to be able to enter the portal and have another year of college eligibility. Could BYU get him?
The American Fork, Utah, native who started for Tom Izzo and played in the Utah Jazz Summer League is considering Kansas, Kentucky, Louisville, and BYU for his fifth year. Mitch breaks down how the injunction works, why the transfer portal rules add another layer of complexity, and what landing Kohler would mean for a BYU basketball team building around Rob Wright, Bruce Branch III, and Collin Chandler.

Reaction to BYU's preseason AP Top 25 ranking + Speculation continues on resources
The preseason AP Top 25 is out and BYU checks in at No. 14, tied with USC with 839 points. KSL Sports BYU Insider Mitch Harper reacts to the Cougars' highest preseason ranking since the 1985 season, the year after BYU's national championship. It's only the 13th time in program history BYU has appeared in the preseason AP poll and just the second time in the Kalani Sitake era. Four Big 12 teams made the cut — Texas Tech at No. 12, BYU at No. 14, Utah at No. 21, and Houston at No. 23 — and BYU's October 17 home date with No. 4 Notre Dame is already circled in red. Historically, BYU has finished higher than its preseason AP ranking only twice (1981, 2009). Can the Cougars make it a third? Mitch discusses what this ranking means for expectations, the College Football Playoff picture, and how voters are viewing BYU's returning production, headlined by Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year LJ Martin and quarterback Bear Bachmeier.
The ongoing Kalani Sitake–BYU football resources and athletic department remains front and center for pockets of Cougar Nation. The speculation that dominated the past two weeks shows no signs of fading, even as the season draws closer. Since Sitake told reporters at picture day, "I'm easy to get along with as long as you take care of our football team," the conversation has only intensified. Sitake's earlier comment that BYU has been "given the challenge of doing the most with the least" added fuel. The hiring of Kentucky's Marc Hill as deputy AD and Santiago's need to post on CougarBoard to debunk firing rumors have kept this story in the backdrop of fall camp.
KSL Sports BYU Insider Mitch Harper shares his thoughts and insight into the situation and makes it clear that BYU has to take care of Kalani Sitake.
Finally, Mitch recaps an eventful scrimmage as BYU enters week three of fall camp. The Cougars ran 102 plays at LaVell Edwards Stadium on Saturday, and the offense had the upper hand. Bear Bachmeier was in a "great rhythm," according to Sitake, who gave the offense a "slight edge" over the defense.

BYU WR expectations + Roger Saleapaga interview + Recruits to watch during HS football season
Despite being a big question mark, BYU football coaches are quietly optimistic for the BYU wide receiver unit entering the 2026 season. What should expectations be for this group that lacks a proven No. 1 receiver this season?
KSL Sports BYU Insider Mitch Harper shared his thoughts and broke down the receiver unit that includes Jojo Phillips, Kyler Kasper, Legend Glasker, Tiger Bachmeier, Reggie Frischknecht, and others.
In this episode, Mitch also caught up with BYU tight end Roger Saleapaga II. The Oregon transfer has settled in nicely within the BYU offense and is expected to be one of the top players on the team.
The 2026-27 NBA schedule was out. We now know when AJ Dybantsa's debut will take place, the games with former BYU players rolling into Salt Lake City, and more.
Then, finally, the top BYU football recruits to watch during the 2026 Utah High School Football season. From the current commits with Uhila Wolfgramm from Maple Mountain to top uncommitted prospects such as Jake Matsen from American Fork, Mitch gives you a primer on prep prospects to follow this fall on KSL Sports.

Kalani Sitake discusses relationship with Brian Santiago + QB coach Tyler Hughes interview
It was a busy Wednesday at the BYU Student Athlete Building, and KSL Sports BYU Insider Mitch Harper unpacks all of it.
The biggest headline: Kalani Sitake met with reporters at team photo day and addressed the elephant in the room — his relationship with athletic director Brian Santiago and his recent comments about BYU's resources. After saying on a recent radio interview that BYU has been "given the challenge of doing the most with the least," Sitake was pressed on what that means going forward. His answer was direct: "My agent's going to handle all of that stuff. I'm going to focus on this year's team. As long as I'm the head coach at BYU, I'm going to fight like crazy to make this a premier program." And on his relationship with Santiago? "I'm easy to get along with as long as you take care of our football team."
Mitch breaks down the context — Sitake turning down Penn State last winter, the recent Santiago rumors, the hiring of new deputy AD Marc Hill from Kentucky — and what it all signals about the current state of the BYU athletic department heading into a critical season.
Also on today's episode, Mitch chats with BYU assistant quarterbacks coach Tyler Hughes. The Salt Lake City native joins the Cougars in his first year after a career that includes four NFL seasons with the New England Patriots, a stint as an offensive analyst at Alabama under Kalen DeBoer. Hughes also brings local roots as a former head coach at Bountiful High School and Snow College. In the interview, Hughes discusses working alongside offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick to develop Bear Bachmeier heading into his sophomore campaign, what he's seen from the quarterback room through fall camp, and his journey from the NFL back to the college game.
And to close things out, Mitch recaps Picture Day inside the Indoor Practice Facility. BYU football took a day off from practice as players and coaches gathered for the official team photo on the outdoor practice field before heading inside the IPF. Mitch shares the scene, the vibe, and notes from a midweek break in the second week of camp as the Cougars continue building toward their September 5 opener against Utah Tech.

Reaction to BYU hiring Kentucky's Marc Hill as Deputy AD + Chad Kauha'aha'a interview
Big news in the BYU Athletics front office. KSL Sports BYU Insider Mitch Harper breaks down the hiring of Marc Hill as BYU's new deputy athletic director. Hill arrives in Provo after spending 27 years at the University of Kentucky, where he served as deputy director of athletics since 2019 and was the football sport administrator since 2012.
Hill was widely considered the frontrunner to succeed longtime Kentucky AD Mitch Barnhart before the school went with an external hire in J Batt. At Kentucky, Hill helped spearhead major facility projects, including a $130 million football stadium renovation, a $49 million baseball stadium, and a $19 million soccer/softball complex. BYU AD Brian Santiago called Hill "a great fit" who brings "a wealth of experience from the highest level of collegiate athletics." BYU advancement VP Keith Vorkink added that Hill's "experience, leadership and alignment with BYU's values" make him an excellent addition. This hire comes just days after the athletic department had to publicly shut down false rumors about Santiago's job status. Mitch discusses what Hill's arrival means for BYU's administrative infrastructure, Kalani Sitake's desire for additional support at the top, and how this fits into the bigger picture of the program's growth in the Big 12.
Also on today's episode, Mitch sits down with BYU football outside linebackers coach Chad Kauha'aha'a. The veteran defensive coach, a former Utah defensive lineman, was promoted from senior analyst to outside linebackers coach in February after spending two seasons behind the scenes on Kalani Sitake's staff. Kauha'aha'a brings over two decades of coaching experience at programs including USC, UCLA, Wisconsin, Utah, Oregon State, Boise State, UNLV, Utah State, and Weber State. He and Sitake have a long coaching history together, dating back to their time on the same staff at Oregon State and at Utah. In the interview, Coach Kauha'aha'a discusses developing BYU's edge rushers heading into 2026, what he's seen from his outside linebackers group through fall camp, and what it means to be coaching on the field after two years as an analyst.

BYU addresses rumors surrounding Brian Santiago + Fall Camp: Week Two observations
Rumors spread like wildfire across social media and fan message boards over the weekend that BYU athletic director Brian Santiago could be fired. It wasn't true. But did it add to the speculation? KSL Sports BYU Insider Mitch Harper breaks down what happened, how BYU's athletic department took the unusual step of having Associate AD for Communications Jon McBride post directly on CougarBoard to officially shut down the speculation.
Santiago, who was named BYU's athletic director in May 2025 after Tom Holmoe's retirement, was spotted on the sideline at a BYU women's soccer game over the weekend and was at fall camp practice on Monday in a navy blue bucket hat.
Co-worker Tyson Hutchins confirmed BYU created the official message board account earlier this year as a way to meet fans where they are — and called the rumor "ridiculous." In his first year leading the department, BYU finished No. 25 in the Learfield Directors' Cup Standings, the highest-ranked athletic department in the Big 12. Mitch shares his thoughts on the situation.
Mitch shares his observations and notes from BYU football fall camp as the Cougars enter their second week of practice at the Student Athlete Building.
True freshman wide receiver Legend Glasker continued to flash with the first-team offense, catching a deep ball from Bear Bachmeier during the media observation window. The tight end duo of Walker Lyons and Roger Saleapaga is emerging as a focal point of BYU's 12-personnel packages, with both making plays in team drills. Kelly Poppinga is settling into his first fall camp as defensive coordinator, and Kalani Sitake has praised the overall team speed as a noticeable improvement from a year ago. Mitch unpacks what he's seeing on both sides of the ball as BYU prepares for a season opener against Utah Tech on September 5.

Will BYU QB Bear Bachmeier run the ball less in 2026? + Cosmo goes into the Hall
BYU football fall camp is rolling, and KSL Sports BYU Insider Mitch Harper kicks off today's episode with the question on every Cougar fan's mind: Will Bear Bachmeier run the ball less in 2026? After rushing for 527 yards and 11 touchdowns as a true freshman last season, BYU offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick gave some insight that there might be less running from the star quarterback.
Mitch breaks down what that means for the offensive game plan and whether Bear can balance protecting himself while still being a threat with his legs.
Next up, Cosmo the Cougar has finally been inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2026, with the announcement coming live on Good Morning America. With three Guinness World Records, a 2020 National Mascot Championship, and viral stunts that routinely break the internet, the real question is: what took so long? Cosmo is only the second Utah-based mascot to enter the Hall of Fame, joining the Jazz Bear, who was inducted 20 years ago in 2006. Mitch discusses why this honor was long overdue.
In a quick-hitter segment, former BYU star and No. 1 overall pick AJ Dybantsa predicted what he thinks his NBA 2K27 rating should be — an 80 overall. The game's developers landed him at a 79. Close, but not quite. The Washington Wizards rookie led the nation in scoring at BYU with 25.5 points per game last season. On the NFL front, former BYU safety Tanner Wall has been signed by the Miami Dolphins after being waived by the Las Vegas Raiders earlier this week. The All-Big 12 First Team honoree recorded 147 career tackles and seven interceptions in 45 games as a Cougar. Mitch shares his thoughts on Wall's path to sticking on an NFL roster.
And finally, BYU star running back LJ Martin is officially back on the practice field for fall camp after undergoing shoulder surgery last December. The Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, who rushed for 1,305 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2025, was cleared for full participation in June and said he's motivated and excited to be competing again. Mitch discusses what a healthy LJ Martin means for BYU's Big 12 title hopes.

Diving into BYU's wide receiver room with Fesi Sitake + Expectations for defense
As BYU football opens fall camp this week, KSL Sports BYU Insider Mitch Harper breaks down the expectations for first-year defensive coordinator Kelly Poppinga. With Jay Hill now at Michigan, "K-Pop" inherits a defense that ranked sixth nationally in returning production and helped BYU go 23-4 over the past two seasons. Poppinga discussed the influence of learning the defense under Hill and the experiences that have prepared him for this moment — 18 years of coaching that trace all the way back to a defensive internship under Bronco Mendenhall. Mitch dives into what that means for BYU in 2026, how much continuity BYU fans should expect, and where Poppinga plans to add his own flavor with a talented and deep roster on that side of the ball.
On the offensive side of the ball, Mitch dives into the wide receivers with Fesi Sitake. Who will emerge as WR1? The leaders, the young guys, Sitake gives insight into his room in a one-on-one conversation with Mitch.
Also on today's episode, Mitch discusses BYU basketball, where the Cougars concluded summer practices. They also officially announced the signing of 6-foot-9 Polish center Jakub Urbaniak. The 23-year-old big man averaged 8.9 points and 5.7 rebounds across the EuroCup and PLK last season for Slask Wroclaw and brings FIBA national team experience with Poland. Head coach Kevin Young called Urbaniak a versatile player on both ends of the floor, praising his motor and competitiveness. With BYU still carrying two open roster spots, Mitch explores what Urbaniak's signing means for the Cougars' frontcourt and what Kevin Young may still have in the works before the 2026-27 season tips off.
